April Phinney

April Phinney

Denver, Colorado

April grew up on a large farm in Missouri, near the Lake of the Ozarks. While she originally pursued a corporate career in marketing, sales, and customer service within the healthcare and telecommunications industries, April often volunteered at hospitals in the Kansas City area. Her passion for non-profit work truly unfolded when she was hired as the Volunteer Director of Ronald McDonald House Charities for eight years.

In 1998 April’s family relocated to Denver, Colorado, where she focused on being a local volunteer and a full-time mother until her children became more independent. Having attained her Bachelor’s degree in Business Management & Marketing from the University of Missouri years before, April’s desire to make a difference in children’s lives pushed her to get a second Bachelor’s degree in Early Childhood Education from the Metropolitan State University of Denver and to become an Early Childhood Education Teacher.

April’s love for Jamaica began 28 years ago when a bicycle tour guide took her to a rural infant/primary school in the Blue Mountains. Subsequent visits to the island moved her to launch Elevate Jamaica in 2017, a non-profit organization whose mission is to support educational projects through summer enrichment programs and tutoring, working one on one with children who are struggling with reading, math, and science.

April formed a relationship with Cornerstone Jamaica when she volunteered to help in one of their See Better. Learn Better. Vision Clinics in 2019.  She instantly knew that working with Cornerstone Jamaica was a match made in heaven, due to their outstanding programs, enthusiastic team, powerful leadership, and a strong history of executing programs that benefit Jamaican children.

April is a passionate educator and humanitarian, who looks forward to working hard on all projects that will benefit and provide greater opportunities for Jamaican children.  She is a Program Coordinator for Cornerstone Jamaica and an active team member of Cornerstone Connex, Container of Love, Project Bounce, School Farming Initiative, and Read Better. Learn Better.  In order to continue enriching her expertise in education, April is currently pursuing studies in Culturally and Linguistically Diverse Learning (CLD).
